1 August 2007
As part of continuous training in Customer Service and Confrontation Management BRI Victoria security officers recently undertook extensive awareness training in counter-terrorism.
The program "Prevention and Response" was in accordance with the Victoria Police Counter- Terrorism and Emergency Management Division's Project Griffin initiative. Its purpose was to train staff on how to identify potential threats to client premises and to increase the general level of awareness on terrorism.
Project Griffin was developed by the City of London Police, and draws on the large number of security officers working in the private sector, In London they provide cordon and containment support to the Metropolitan Police during major incidents such as those of the 7/7 bombings.
It also creates 'an army of eyes and ears' who exchange information with police during regular telephone hook ups. In Australia the Victoria Police have embraced this concept and such have developed an awareness program for the private security sector.
Training focused on Introduction to Terrorism, Threats to Australia, Hostile Reconnaissance, Suicide Bombers and Explosive Devices, Identification and Response Protocols, Intelligence Gathering and Sharing, Chemical, Biological and Radiological Identification and Awareness - Identification and immediate response protocols.
"Our working environment is constantly evolving and so must we," said BRI Victorian State Manager Frank Bellomo.
"As an organisation providing security services, continuous training and development of our workforce remains a constant focus. Having our entire workforce counter-terrorism trained is a very important aspect of keeping up with the changes in our environment."
"It is these initiatives that benefit our clients and make BRI an employer of choice," he said.
The program has recently commenced and it is expected our entire Victorian workforce will be fully trained before the end of 2007.
